WHAT IS OSMOSIS?
How do molecules get in and out of cells? (Movement of molecules in and out of cells) Molecules such as nutrients and waste products move in and out of cells by diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of ions or molecules from an area where they are more concentrated to an area where they are less concentrated, i. H. along a concentration gradient. Osmosis is a special type of diffusion that allows ions or molecules to move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration through a partially permeable membrane. Here, the partially permeable membrane is the surface membrane of the cell. The cellulose cell wall is naturally permeable and allows most substances to pass through. Sometimes living cells can take up certain substances, even though these substances have a higher concentration inside the cell than outside in the environment. That is, against the concentration gradient. This process is called active transport and is made possible by the use of energy. Whenever a molecule is absorbed against a concentration gradient, an energy molecule in the form of ATP or adenosine triphosphate is used. Active transport is involved in a number of processes in the body. This includes the absorption of dissolved mineral salts through the root hairs. Transportin cells: diffusion and osmosis | cells | Biology | FuseSchool In this video we learn how cells take in useful substances and get rid of waste using three transport methods: diffusion, osmosis. In the second part we deal with active transport. The exchange of substances between cells and their environment takes place via the cell membrane. In order to make this exchange as efficient as possible, some organisms have developed special exchange surfaces, for example alveoli, plant trichomes or nephrons in the kidneys. Depending on what is being exchanged and in which direction things are moving along the concentration gradient, the decision is made whether to use diffusion, osmosis or active transport. Diffusion is the process by which particles move apart. They move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration along the concentration gradient until they are evenly distributed. Osmosis is very similar to diffusion, but only applies to water. It is the movement of water in or out of the cell. Again, it is a transition from a dilute solution (having such a high concentration of water molecules) to a more concentrated solution (having such a low concentration of water molecules) along a concentration gradient. Water molecules move through a partially permeable membrane.
